DISTRICT ACCOUNTANT

Full Time Position/12 Month (260 days per year)

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY:

Scio School District is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative District Accountant to join our District Office team. This position plays a critical role in supporting the accuracy and efficiency of the district’s financial operations, while also assisting with the management and compliance of local, state, and federal grants. The successful candidate will work closely with district leadership to support budgeting, reporting, and long-range financial planning. This role reports directly to the Business Manager.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure that all accounting tasks are completed accurately and on time;
  • Prepare financial reports, including monthly report submitted to the Business Manager;
  • Perform district’s cash management activities;
  • Prepare cash flow analyses; Prepare bank reconciliations;
  • Conduct general ledger analysis; review for accuracy;
  • Make accurate journal entries;
  • Account for federal, state, and local grant funds;
  • Communicate regularly with departments, school sites, and external partners regarding grant timelines, reimbursements, spending, and other budget matters;
  • Perform special projects assigned by the Business Manager, i.e. financial data for budget preparation, estimates of ending fund balance for all funds;
  • Prepare for the fiscal year-end financial audit; work directly with outside auditors throughout the process;
  • Provide and maintain adequate controls and safeguards over district assets;
  • Establish, revise controls and accounting procedures for new and ongoing programs;
  • Monitor and control daily cash flows;
  • Track and report on district credit cards;
  • Support procurement processes;
  • Assist with Oregon Department of Education state financial reporting and data submissions;
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of budgeting and accounting.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent General Ledger Accounting experience of at least five years preferred;
  • Knowledge of legal and reporting requirements of school district financial and attendance accounting and state/school district accounting and financial relationships;
  • Five years of responsible school accounting office experience or equivalent, including accounting knowledge of general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and state and federal taxes and reports preferred;
  • Ability to prepare accurate financial reports; and read and understand financial records and reports, technical and legal matters;
  • Leadership style that is collaborative and builds a culture of customer service and professionalism;
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to develop and communicate complex financial information for a variety of users.
  • Ability to devise new forms and establish procedures for record-keeping in accordance with generally accepted principles of accounting;
  • Ability to apply policies judiciously and follow oral and written instructions carefully;
  • Ability to maintain cooperative and courteous relationships with those contacted in the course of work;
  • Proficient in Excel.
  • Experience with Tyler Technologies is preferred.
