POSITION TITLE:
High Needs Special Education Assistant

REPORTS TO:
Building Principal and/or Assigned Licensed Special Education Teacher

POSITION SUMMARY

The High Needs Special Education Assistant provides intensive support to students with significant disabilities and/or high behavioral, medical, or physical support needs. Assists with instruction, daily living skills, personal care, and behavior intervention under the direction of licensed special education staff. Support may be provided in a variety of educational settings and may involve one-on-one or small-group instruction to support student safety, access to learning, and progress toward Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist students with academic tasks in one-on-one or small-group instructional settings.
  • Implement Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals, behavior intervention plans, and safety protocols.
  • Provide personal care support, including toileting, feeding, hygiene, and mobility assistance.
  • Support communication needs using assistive technology, sign language, picture systems, or other alternative communication methods.
  • Monitor, collect, and document data related to student behavior and progress.
  • Utilize district-approved de-escalation strategies and behavior intervention techniques.
  • Use trained and district-approved physical intervention techniques when required to ensure student and staff safety.
  • Support safe transitions between activities and locations throughout the school day.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, cafeterias, buses, field trips, and other school-related activities.
  • Collaborate with teachers, specialists, therapists, and other team members.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and adhere to all federal, state, and district legal guidelines.
  • Attend required trainings, staff meetings, and team meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to lift and assist students with physical needs (up to 50 lbs independently; or up to 150 lbs with assistance).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Ability to pass background check and fingerprint clearance.
  • Willingness and ability to work with students who have complex learning, behavioral, or physical needs.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, able to move quickly in high-stress behavior situations.

Preferred:

  • Experience working with students who have significant disabilities and/or intensive behavioral needs.
  • Familiarity with IEPs, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), and sensory regulation strategies.
  • Training in de-escalation, crisis intervention, or physical restraint (e.g., CPI, OIS).

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Exposure to bodily fluids and student behaviors that may be aggressive or disruptive.
  • Indoor and outdoor supervision in varied weather conditions.
  • Close collaboration with staff in a structured, team-based setting.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Work year, wages, hours, and benefits are governed by the applicable classified collective bargaining agreement.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon successful background and fingerprint clearance and maintenance of required certifications.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain current First Aid and CPR certification as required by the district.
