POSITION TITLE
Summer Learning Program Teaching Assistant
REPORTS TO
Building Principal and/or Summer Learning Program Coordinator
POSITION SUMMARY
Supports students and teachers in the district’s summer learning program. Assists with classroom instruction, student supervision, small-group support, and daily program activities. Helps create a safe, positive, and engaging learning environment while supporting student participation, literacy development, and overall program goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist the teacher with daily instructional activities in literacy and other assigned academic areas.
- Provide support to individual students and small groups under the direction of the teacher.
- Reinforce skills and concepts taught during classroom instruction.
- Support students with reading, writing, math, and other learning activities as assigned.
- Assist with preparation, organization, and cleanup of instructional materials.
- Help students stay engaged and on task during lessons and activities.
- Supervise students during classroom activities, transitions, arrival, dismissal, meals, recess, field trips, and other program activities.
- Support a safe, respectful, and positive environment for all students.
- Assist students with routines, expectations, and behavior in accordance with district practices.
- Provide encouragement and support to students who need additional academic, social, emotional, or behavioral assistance.
- Report student concerns or needs to the classroom teacher or Summer Learning Program Coordinator.
- Assist with daily program routines, schedules, transitions, and activities.
- Support enrichment activities, special events, and field trips as assigned.
- Help maintain accurate and timely records, including attendance, participation, and other program documentation as directed.
- Assist with setup, organization, and supervision of program spaces.
- Follow direction from the classroom teacher and Summer Learning Program Coordinator.
- Support meaningful participation for all students.
- Use respectful, inclusive, and culturally responsive interactions with students, families, and staff.
- Help create a welcoming environment where students feel safe, supported, and included.
- Support students identified as needing additional assistance so they can fully participate in the program.
- Communicate with students, families, and staff in a professional and respectful manner.
- Refer family questions or concerns to the classroom teacher or Summer Learning Program Coordinator.
- Work cooperatively with teachers, educational assistants, program staff, and district personnel.
- Follow all district policies, safety procedures, and applicable federal, state, and local laws.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and school-related information in accordance with district policy and privacy laws.
- Participate in required training, planning, and staff meetings.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance during the summer program.
- Act as a mandatory reporter and immediately report suspected child abuse or neglect in accordance with state law and district procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to pass required background and fingerprint checks.
- Ability to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening (UA test) if required by the district.
Preferred
- Experience working with children.
- Prior experience in a school, childcare, or summer program setting.
- Ability to meet district and state requirements for an educational assistant position, if applicable.
- Experience working with diverse student populations.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- School environment with frequent interaction with students and staff.
- Temporary summer contract position, typically operating for approximately four weeks.
- Additional training or preparation time may be required prior to program start.
- Requires daily on-site attendance during program dates.
- Requires standing, walking, and active supervision throughout the day.
- May include indoor and outdoor supervision and responding to student behavioral or emotional needs.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Work year, wages, hours, and benefits are governed by the applicable classified collective bargaining agreement, if applicable.
- Continued employment is contingent upon successful background and fingerprint clearance and passing any required pre-employment drug screening.
